Your base products can make or break your whole look, that’s why it’s important to find one (or a few) that works well for you. I have combination-oily skin which means I need matte, or semi-matte products to ensure my make up looks good all day; here’s a few of my favourites which I can always rely on.
Without a doubt, my favourite everyday base products are BareMinerals Complexion Rescue and NARS Velvet Matte Skin Tint. Neither of these products are branded as foundations, they’re more along the lines of BB creams and tinted moisturisers. The NARS Velvet Matte Skin Tint holds much more coverage than the Complexion Rescue, so I tend to use this one more when my skin is acting up more than usual, and the BareMinerals one on good skin days. Complexion Rescue is also really good for hot days; it feels light on the skin, and since it is light coverage it doesn’t look as if it’s melting off your skin.
My favourite ‘proper’ foundation is the Fresh Nude Foundation by The Body Shop. It’s similar in consistency to L’Oreal’s True Match Foundation, but I found a better shade match in this range. It’s a medium coverage foundation with a semi-matte finish, perfect for those of us who look like grease balls with dewy finishes!
A recent discovery for me was NYX Mineral Stick Foundation. I love the ease of this product; you can draw it directly onto your face with no mess and seamlessly blend it out with a brush or sponge. It’s quite a light coverage so I tend to use this on good skin days but I like the fact that it blurs away imperfections and evens out my skin tone.
I have three favourite concealers which I interchange daily. I tend to use Rimmel’s Lasting Finish concealer for spot coverage; it’s so high coverage and the fact that it’s a poured concealer means that it stays around all day. As you can see from the picture above, my Collection Lasting Perfection concealer is well loved. This is actually my fourth tube of it and I really need to replace it again already! A new discovery is Maybelline’s Fit Me concealer; I love the coverage it gives without feeling heavy or creasing throughout the day. This one is also really good or spot coverage.
I can’t say that I’ve tried too many setting powders over the years but Bourjois’ Java Rice Loose Powder is brilliant for those of us who need to set out base, but don’t want to look too matte. It sets make up well and leaves a lovely radiant finish to the skin. A close second favourite would be BareMinerals Mineral Veil which achieves a similar finish, just at a much higher price point.
